Gzira | An Introduction.

Located in the Central Region of Malta, Gzira is a town with a population of roughly 8,000. The word Gzira actually stands for “island” in Maltese and derives its name from neighbouring Manoel Island. It is situated between Msida and Sliema, and the promenade stretches alongside it to reveal the yacht marina, public gardens, endless bars and restaurants.

It’s location makes it ideal for families and students as the University is within walking distance. It also happens to be a ferry ride away from Valletta, the capital city that attracts tourists and locals alike by the thousands every day. The area is also rich in amenities and is known for commercial outlets, blue collar businesses as well as being a stone’s throw away from Sliema – one of Malta’s densely rich commercial area.

The town’s location makes it ideal for entertainment. Seeing as it forms part of Sliema, restaurants and bars come in abundance. Walking the promenade is an absolute joy at any time of the day or evening. On Sundays, families stride along and appreciate the vast view across the front. Couples and singles can enjoy the very same or opt for one of the ferry tours available near year round.

Swimming, sunbathing and finding a quiet spot are all within reach. If you would like a more cultural excursion, you may feel adventurous and explore Manoel Island and it’s fortification. This area offers great views, especially when looking back at the Sliema seafront. Venture further and you’ll find yourself a boat ride away from Valletta.

In the last 10 years, the architecture has been updated to more modern standards. The heart of Gzira has however retained more of it’s character; traditional Maltese facades and “Gallarijji” which is Maltese for balconies are still intact. Gzira has a higher than average traffic rate. A large number of commuters employed within this area and neighbouring towns means off peak traffic hours are still remotely busy. Commuting however is relatively easy and for some, the much quicker option to get to their destination. Walking to and from Gzira is a joy and always offers a scenic view to enjoy. For longer commutes, the bus service is readily available to cater for the large footfall.

A large number of taxi services are also stationed within vicinity, and lastly, scooters are becoming increasingly popular in recent times. This primarily helps with parking, as it does get tougher on the outer side of the town.
