Ghar id-dud | An introduction

Ghar id dud is located in Sliema, nearing Qui Si Sana and Font Ghadir. Built on porous rock this area holds many marine caves some fully submerged under the sea. It’s name Ghar id dud literally means ‘cave of worms’ since so many are known to live within these holes.

The popular promenade at Għar id-Dud, sees many joggers, walkers and families and children strolling along at all times of day. It is also a great area for snorkelling, swimming, restaurants and café life.
The view from here is impeccable. The early morning sun rising over the Sliema Promenade, overlooking the tranquil blue water is just magnificent!

‘Chalet’ is one of the most renowned landmarks in this area. An old discotheque from the 1970s where most of the post-World War II generation use to hang out. Over the years, this became an eroded standing building used as a base jump for enthusiastic swimmers to jump into the water from. This was demolished in 2006 and completely closed off in 2015 by government officials as a safety precaution, although the bottom foundation still remains. In recent years this has become a popular swimming spot due to its comfortable flat cement foundation and the available ladders with easy access to the sea.
