Marsamxett Harbour is divided from the Grand Harbour, located just north to it. Like the Grand Harbour, it is natural and was once referred to historically as Marsamuscetto. Every side of this harbour is postcard picturesque – the views are endless. Fort Saint Elmo, Fort Manoel and Fort Tigne can all be seen from here, sitting being fortified walls which are best viewed on one of the many boat rides available at all times of the year. These three forts and high walls begin to give you an indication as to the value this Harbour once retained. Throughout history, the forts were constructed to protect the harbour, which today make for stunning backdrops. To the north of the Harbour you have the towns of Sliema, Gzira and Ta’ Xbiex. To the south of it, you’ll find one side of Valletta and commuting back and fourth, is a ferry service bridging both – an option many enjoy over taking the bus as the experience is far more pleasurable and in some ways, more convenient too.
In the centre of Marsamxett Harbour, you will also find Manoel Island. It’s the location of Fort Manoel, one of Malta’s most visited historic sites. Nowadays, it is a berthing area for boats and yachts alike which in recent years has hosted some very notable international figures such as Roman Abramovich – the convenience, location and island seems irresistible even to the rich elite. What’s there to think about? This is most certainly a desired place to live in – and the good news is that the various areas that make up Marsamxett Harbour, can cater for all types of income. Some areas retain more value than others due to the influx of wealthy foreign and expat investments predominantly on the seafront – another testament to the value of this location. However, travel slightly inland and you are still just minutes away from open spaces, vast views, great sweeping skies and gorgeous seas. A walk along the immensely satisfying seafront will take you through three of more cities and entertainment is found on every corner. It is home to a large number of cultures and this has prompted the community to open a variety of different cuisines and kitchens – there never is a dull moment and escaping it is just as easy. A walk to the water’s edge and you find yourself immersed in a different world just glancing at the historic structures that rise above you.
Apartments are more readily available, with a number of new projects underway. The increase in population has pushed the demand for more seafront property and old buildings are making way for new and modern options. New businesses are also increasingly present and the overall quality of the neighbouring cities that fall within Marsamxett Harbour, is also on the up. Family facilities, entertainment, services and retail options are all consistently built upon which makes this one of the most fast moving areas on the Island. If you enjoy change, trying new and different things daily, living in the thick of things but also the calm of the seaside, then Marsamxett Harbour is most certainly an option you will wish to consider. We highly suggest you experience this all first hand – so why don’t you grab a coffee and begin your walk from one end to the other and take it all in at your own pace. Stop for lunch and try out something new, treat yourself, grab the ferry over to Valletta, and on your way back, look around – you’ll agree it’s a breathtaking scene and you will want to stay.
